In my work, reality and fiction interact through layers.

Maria José Cabral (Lisbon, 1993) is a contemporary artist based in Lisbon, Portugal, recognized for her vibrant layered, paintings on both canvas and paper, which explore the dynamic interplay between imagination and reality. Her work is deeply rooted in themes of memory and dreams, capturing fleeting moments that hover between the conscious and unconscious. Working primarily with acrylics, Maria José’s style is defined by her bold and extensive use of color, creating immersive scenes where vivid hues merge fluidly with dreamlike forms.
Her creative journey took a new direction with a desire to rekindle her passion for art, driven by a need to express deeply personal narratives. Imagine starting your day with a coffee in hand, wandering through your personal studio. Each piece painted isn’t just artwork; it’s a reservoir of positive emotions. Colorful paintings, with their vivid hues and dynamic forms, have a way of injecting energy into artis space and spirit.
The synergy between different forms of communication beyond painting is reflected in my work in a volatile manner—whether through the themes I depict or the mediums I use. It is a process of assimilating concepts that reflect my theoretical and artistic thinking, merging them with the experimental side that arises from fragments of time, gathered from various situations and experiences. My journey into the world of art wasn't a straight line—it was more of a delightful scribble! From doodling on the margins of my notebooks as a kid to studying fine arts in college, every step was a building block towards becoming the artist I am today.
Imagine starting your day with a coffee in hand, wandering through your personal studio. Each piece painted isn’t just artwork; it’s a reservoir of positive emotions. Colorful paintings, with their vivid hues and dynamic forms, have a way of injecting energy into my space and spirit. Studies suggest that colors play a significant role in influencing our mood and well-being. Engaging with art infused with thoughtful color psychology can turn a routine day into an inspiring one. There's real power in colors. They affect mood. It becomes my gateway to the world.
Art isn’t just to be viewed—it’s to be experienced. There's a unique joy in sharing my work with others. Whether it's hosting a small gallery night or simply having friends over in the studio, the artwork collect sparks conversations and connects people. Discussing the stories behind each colorful painting, talk about why a particular piece caught someone’s eye, or simply a silent conversation between the viewer and the canvas, can be incredibly rewarding. It's about sharing a piece of my world and maybe inspiring someone else to start their own journey.
Each piece has a story—perhaps it's a landscape from a distant land or a scene that evokes a fond memory. By bringing these colorful paintings into your home, you link your own narrative to broader, more diverse histories.
